First, they may be quite destructive. They want food and shelter and will do what it takes to get it. They could tear holes in your roof, split screens, rip up your duct work and destroy your insulation. A bigger problem comes in the urine and feces that they leave behind. Raccoon droppings often contain roundworms which may be transferred to people and pets. They can also carry diseases, fleas and ticks. Although it’s true that there is a risk of rabies, it is a very small risk. In fact, there’s only been one recorded case from the United States where a raccoon infected an individual.

Raccoon Removal

There are products which contain fox or coyote urine that you may use to try to repel the raccoons, but they’re largely ineffective. You can also try ammonia, mothballs or transmitters that send out high frequency sounds, but these tend not to work either. The only foolproof way to eliminate raccoons is to trap and remove them.

The issue with raccoons is that they’re not tiny animals. If you manage to trap one, it can be tough to release it in the wild. If released, it’s typical for the raccoons to find their way back to your  home. In many cases, people who attempt to trap and eliminate raccoons by themselves may end up becoming injured or hurting the raccoon in an inhumane way. Never try and approach or manage a raccoon – they are wild animals and WILL bite and claw the heck out of you.

What you should do is call your local animal control or somebody who deals in wildlife removal. They will come out to your house, trap the animals and relocate them from your premises. Your garbage, try a few of the tips to dissuade them. Purchase trash cans that have lids that lock into place and use a bungee cord to keep the lid down. You can even place a heavy object on the lid such as a cinder block. Some people swear by baby powder onto the lid only because they state raccoons do not enjoy the powder to get on their hands. You may also try playing with a radio at a low volume. Raccoons may be turned off from the sounds. Double bagging your garbage can likewise be effective as it will help to mask the odor which attracts the raccoon in the first location.

Raccoons are very good at breaking through any defenses you set up, so you might have to try a few of those things before it’s possible to get raccoons to stay away from your dwelling.
